Should I tow in sport or manual mode, or using cruise control?
QUESTION
Hi John,
I tow my 2800kg caravan with an automatic BT50 (2019) >> and was asking for advice on in which mode I should be doing this. On auto or sport/manual mode?
Also, when towing, should I or should I not use cruise control?
Thanks for your reply; I enjoy your vids on YouTube and just realised I bought an “executive” “hardly used” second hand model - had I seen your channel, I would never had.
Many thanks,
Ed
ANSWER
Ed,
Just tow it in auto. At times, you might want to manually turn off the overdrive. Let the computer do the thinking mate. Here’s my full report on this habit >>
If a mode is called ‘sport’ it’s safe to say it wasn’t designed with towing a caravan as its primary purpose.
As for using cruise control while towing, it depends on the driving conditions. (Just like cruise control in the wet >>)
In conditions that evolve rapidly such as rolling terrain or heavy traffic, crests and curves, I would not use cruise.
If you’re droning endlessly across the Nullabor or similar in good conditions at a steady 90km/h or something, sure. Why not? (Unless the owner’s manual says “don’t” or unless the vehicle seems to be struggling with it.)

The BYD Shark 6 is the third Chinese ute trying to compete with Ranger, Hilux and Triton. It promises affordability and more power than a Ranger Raptor. But can the Shark 6 really be a better dual-cab ute?
